The Purpose of Education

AMEN BROTHER

thelearningbrain:

The purpose of education should be to teach children how to think and discover things for themselves, not what to think or directly tell them outcomes.

A small project I directed in Jamaica back in 2011 while I was working on “Until We Have Faces.” I got a chance to meet Steven, was really impressed by his passion for teaching music underprivileged Kingston kids, and decided to feature his work in a short-form documentary.

Inspiring! Everyone should have music.

SMF Education is going to New York (City) this weekend and we want to see some MUZAK/MUSIC (pref. music). Suggestions?????

Happy birthday to Mary Lou Williams, innovative jazz pianist, composer, and arranger. Check out this great profile on her from 2010 in Smithsonian Folkways Magazine

We love Sharon Jones. A little music to kick-start your midweek.
nprmusic:

Listen to Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings’ explosive new single “Retreat.”
The new album Give The People What They Want will be released August 6 via Daptone.

Some recent academic texts about music (and one about anime).

Academic (meaning that they’re usually written for an audience of grad students, professors, and sometimes undergrad students) publications, while less accessible than books written for a broader audience, often offer much deeper insights on topics that we usually take for granted (like the mp3, for instance).

My recent book purchase says so much about my scholarly interests. One on Brazilian music, two on creative labor, and one on technologies of music distribution. Yup!
