Get to Know AMS: Erik Alvar
This month, the SMF Education Department will be introducing you to the 16 young musicians participating in this year’s Acoustic Music Seminar. Each one will be visiting the Savannah Music Festival for an incredible week of playing, creating, and writing with world-renowned artists like Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, and Bruce Molsky to name a few.
Check back tomorrow to meet a new participant!
Get to know: Erik Alvar
Hometown: Melbourne Beach, Florida
Whether it’s a classical symphony or a jazz combo, Erik Alvar can play his bass almost anywhere. Erik is a senior at Florida State University studying Commercial Music and bass with musicians like Melanie Putner and Rodney Jordan (a clinician with SMF’s Swing Central Jazz).
When he’s not studying, Erik takes his bass to the Latin American ensemble, the multicultural improvisation ensemble, an old-time ensemble, a big band, and the University Philharmonic Orchestra.
Tallahassee offered Erik a home in the acoustic music community and by the time he was a sophomore he was performing weekly with various bluegrass and folk groups as far away as Miami and Nashville.
Right now, Erik performs regularly with the Aaron O’Rourke Trio and Americana artist Grant Peeples.
What’s Erik looking forward to besides AMS? He wants to go back to grad school in a year or two for classical bass performance, and he’d also like to start or teach a program much like AMS.
Check out this track of Erik playing with the Aaron O’Rourke Trio.
Make sure to see this year’s participants in action with Julian Lage and Mike Marshall at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts on April 6th at 5PM. For more information visit the Savannah Music Festival’s web site.
